World Trade Center 9/11/2001
Tough Times - In honor of the first responders, the emergency crews and workers who came in the aftermath of the September 11 Twin Towers disaster. Since this print was designed during the weeks that followed the 2001 disaster, it is illustrated with a background photograph showing the devastation, the remains of the buildings, and the courageous reconstruction workers on the site of New York's World Trade Center at ground zero. This famous quotation on persistence comes from Calvin Coolidge, and is illustrated with a composited image of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome by Michelangelo. Historical information is written out in calligraphy in an architectural window detail from Michelangelo’s design for the Farnese Palace at lower left. Sculpted tiles by Antonio del Pontasieve, 1513, were designed after drawings by Michelangelo and form the decorative square designs at the corners of the print. Calligraphy and design by Ann Miller.
